Shadows of Knight – Gary

Well Russell, we come to NOT one of my favourite groups, BUT a song I just love, “Gloria ” (originally done by Van Morrison when he fronted the group “Them”).

Shadows of Knight

This is a band that sounded British, looked British, but hailed from the Chicago Area.  They where very big around the North Chicago Area in 64/65 and where the house band at a place called the Cellar in Arlington Heights, Illinois.  The line ups where huge so one night in 1965 it attracted the attention of Dunwich Record Producers Bill Traut and George Badonski and during that gig they did “Gloria“.

Well even though it was there first effort, “Gloria”, was huge and was actually # 1 in Canada, but not in the US.  There is a lot of confusion as to just how popular the song was because Dunwich was not a National label and it was released on a staggered basis.

They released a few follow up songs but could never achieve the popularity of Gloria.

Their last entrance on to the charts was with “Shake” and a new label.

  1. Nice blog entry 🙂

Love the Shadows of Knight, although I am probably partial because I was with them for so many years.

    Take Care,

  2. Well, I am glad that someone actually reads this stuff that we put on “our” Blog. I just looked at some figures and since recorded, “Gloria” has sold in excess of 8 million copies! The largest selling singles are still Bing Crosby “White Christmas” & “Silent Night” and Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind”. 30 to 40 Million. I think Elton John has sold the most around 37 Million.
