Looking Back! 1968

Gary: “I am back from Texas, so I will finish the last two Looking Back years…
Looking Back
Toronto
1968
In 1968, it was my first year of marriage.  I had a new job, working for the Giant Chemical Company BASF, in it’s Computer Media Division.

They built a new plant in Bedford Massachusetts, which was State Of The Art, even  filtering the air before it got into the plant.  I also had a new car, 1968 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme with a 350 cubes and a 4 barrel carb.

We lived in Downtown Toronto, in a one bedroom apartment, which was a new building on Gamble Avenue, North of Danforth and East of Broadview.  It was the only time that I ever lived close to the Downtown core.

When I joined the Basf Corporation, I joined with an older man in Montreal who’s name was “Ken Brown”; now that name would be significant later in the Seventies.

I would become close friends with his son “Drew Brown”, who was Senior VP at the Bank of Nova Scotia and we would remain friends up to and including this date.  We are still  friends today.

My days of traveling across Canada and into the United States were just about to start.  This company, although they invented Magnetic Media, where relatively unknown in North America, so it was a big hill to climb, but it would ultimately become very successful.

What I remember about 1968.

Music of 1968

We lost Frankie Lymon (of Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers) drug overdose, he was only 25.
We also lost Little Willie John of Fever fame to Pneumonia and he was only 30.
In late 1967 (December) my favourite Soul Singer Otis Redding was killed.
If I remember correctly, the British Sound was not as strong, Soul and Folk were still there, but the phenomenon called “Bubblegum” had a resurgence. Don Kirshner creates “The Archies” and Kassenetz-Katz starts producing groups like the 1910 Fruitgum Company, The Ohio Express and so on.
The other great group, for me, that was born was “Creedance Clearwater Revival” with the Fogerty Brothers.

  1. That doesn’t look like Steppenwolf in that picture. Are you guyz sure about that?

    • I do agree with you, but it is Steppenwolf and John Kay. They started in Oshawa Ontario as “The Sparrow” and eventually changed the name to Steppenwolf. I have checked the source and it states Steppenwolf, but I will find one that looks more like John Kay.

  2. I went to school with Merilee.She was a knockout.Very,very hot.She was in my H.S. Freshman class.
I hears she lives now in a Ranch outside Seattle in Redmond,Washington.

  3. I first saw Merilee Rush at a dance when I was a teenager. She was so good that she set the place on its ear, so to speak. She can currently be seen in the KCTS documentary about the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, “When Seattle Invented the Future.” She still looks great by the way and is instantly recognizable to her fans.
